Apple released iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on September 14, 2026, as free updates. The release centers on a rebuilt Siri with a dedicated app, plus refinements to the Liquid Glass design, faster performance, and a set of useful changes to Safari, Photos, and parental controls. Here is what is new on each platform and what it means for everyday use.
Changes Across All Three Platforms
Siri AI. The new Siri draws on personal context from your messages, email, and photos, understands what is on your screen, and can carry out actions across apps. It has its own app with a chat-style interface and conversation history that syncs through iCloud. On iPhone, Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
Liquid Glass refinements. The design introduced last year gets better contrast and more uniform refraction, and a new slider lets you choose how transparent or tinted it looks.
Speed. Apple reports app launches up to 30 percent faster and photo library loading up to 70 percent faster. AirDrop transfers are also faster, and search was rebuilt in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail.
Safari Notify Me. Safari can watch a web page and alert you when a price drops or an item comes back in stock.
iOS 27 on iPhone
Search and Siri together. Pulling down from the Home Screen or the Dynamic Island opens a combined Siri and Spotlight search.
Photos. Clean Up removes unwanted objects. Extend generates image content beyond the original borders, and Spatial Reframing lets you adjust the composition of a photo after you take it.
Safari. Tabs are grouped automatically by topic.
Audio. Alarms and timers get their own volume controls, and AirPods gain a custom equalizer.
Handoff between iPhones. You can move a call between two iPhones that share a phone number, if your carrier supports it.
Find My, Apple Cash, and CarPlay. You can share your location for a set length of time or pause sharing with a specific person. Apple Cash can read a receipt and work out how to split it, in the U.S. only. CarPlay can play video on a parked vehicle's display.
Family safety. Parental controls and child safety features are expanded, with age-appropriate protections and more oversight of communication and apps.
iPadOS 27 on iPad
Closer to a Mac. The status bar shows the name of the current app, and you can keep the menu bar visible at all times. Command-Space opens Siri, as it does on a Mac.
Faster file access. Transfers to and from external drives are up to five times faster, and browsing files is closer to Mac speed.
Image Playground and Safari. Image Playground can now generate photorealistic images, and Safari gains the Notify Me feature.
App updates and compatibility. Messages, Notes, Photos, Calendar, Mail, Reminders, Maps, Safari, and Apple Music all receive updates. Five older models are not supported: the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation), iPad (8th generation), iPad mini (5th generation), and iPad Air (3rd generation).
macOS 27 Golden Gate on Mac
Siri app. The Mac gets a dedicated Siri app, opened with Command-Space, that supports voice input, file and image attachments, search, and pinned conversations.
Visual Intelligence and Ask Siri. Command-Shift-Space lets you select part of the screen for Siri to analyze. Right-clicking text, an image, or a file offers an Ask Siri option to summarize, rewrite, or explain it.
Shortcuts and Safari. You can describe an automation in plain language and have Shortcuts build it. Safari adds Notify Me and automatic tab organization.
A more traditional look. Toolbars return to a conventional layout, sidebars run edge to edge with colored icons, and menus use fewer icons.
Everyday improvements. Apple also improved external display support, AirDrop, Spotlight, Mail search, iCloud Photos syncing, Mission Control, and Spaces.
What This Means for Managed Devices
If you look after a fleet of Apple devices, check compatibility before you roll out the updates. Siri AI needs newer iPhone hardware, and several older iPad models stop at the previous version. Test the new Siri and its access to personal data against your organization's privacy expectations before turning it on widely.
Summary
iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 make Siri a central part of each device, with a dedicated app, system-wide search, and the ability to work across apps. Alongside that, you get faster performance, a more adjustable design, price and stock alerts in Safari, and stronger family safety tools. Check your devices against the compatibility lists, then update.
